65+

Man may be the stronger sex, but at your age, the playing field is leveling out.

By the age of 65, you are losing bone mass at the same rate as women your age.

And that puts you at risk of osteoporosis.

  • After age 50, 6 percent of all men will experience a hip fracture and 5 percent will have a vertebral fracture as a result of osteoporosis.
  • In addition to biological changes, the medications you now take may put you at further risk – especially those Glucocorticoids (sterioids) prescribed for asthma and rheumatoid arthritis.

What can you do?

  • Talk to your phyiscian about minimal effective dosing or other options.
  • Get a bone mineral density test
  • Up your intake of calcium and Vitamin D

Another thing that may be complicating your life is osteoarthritis.

Taking over-the-counter acetomiophen may alleviate the pain, but be careful not to take more than 3,000 mg a day  - more than 56,000 people accidentally overdose on acetaminophen each year and wind up in the emergency room.
