Tweens & Teens

You’re playing sports, making your own decisions and did you know you are still growing? Your bones are working hard to reach their “peak bone mass” which will determine your bone structure for the rest of your lifetime.

So how can you help your body reach your growth potential? Here are some tips

  • Get out and exercise!
    • Any exercise that puts weight on your skeletal structure will increase your bone growth
    • Spend 20 minutes or so doing the following:
      • Walking
      • Running
      • Jump rope
      • Gymnastics
      • Tumbling
      • Bike Riding
  • Add more calcium to your diet!
    • Girls need at least 1300 milligrams of day. If your body does not get the calcium it needs, it takes calcium from the only source that it has: your bones. This can lead to broken bones now and osteoporosis when you get older. Here are some sneaky ways to add a little more calcium to your diet
      • Have macaroni and cheese made with milk
      • Prepare canned tomato soup with milk instead of water.
      • Try tofu
      • Add ricotta cheese to pasta
      • Eat cheese pizza
      • Have pudding made with milk or frozen yogurt for a treat
